Hi Bryan, I’m a member of the Portland Effective Altruists and Rationalists and a big fan of your work. Is there any chance you’d be interested in coming on our podcast? It’s a low-budget affair mostly just for friends but we would love to interview you!

In person or remotely?

I won't have time for the interview, but you and all your friends are welcome at the meet-up at Gabbiano's.

In person is how we’re currently set up, just in a friend’s living room in Portland. We could possibly do remote as well.

Bryan, there's some good hiking about 45 minutes north of Madison at Devil's Lake, would be happy to go with you one of the other days you'll be in town.

Hi Bryan, apologies for the delayed response and maybe you've already secured transportation to Mt. St. Helens, but I've got a family obligation conflicts with timing of the hike (and it also sounds like you're doing a more real hike than I should try with 2-weeks post-op knee in any case!) But if you're really stuck for transportation, I might be able to shuttle (the ride there, leaving Portland around noon(?) I can do; pick-up would be a little tighter . . .). But let me know.

What's the timeframe on the MT. St. Helens hike? I probably can drive some people. (I love hiking but I unfortunately just had meniscus surgery a week and half ago - my knee already feels pretty good, considering, but I probably shouldn't do more than a mile or so . . . but I can figure that out, just hang at the visitor center, etc.)

Hi Bryan, I'm in Portland and have been following your work for a long time - I've been teaching "Myth of the Rational Voter" to my political theory classes (usually the Cato Policy Analysis version, but the book a few times, too!) for over 15 years. It would be great to see you at the meet-up and I'm a maybe for the Mt. St. Helens hike.

I’m interested in the St. Helens hike too. I’m not an experienced hiker, do want to do something challenging? What are you thinking. I’m a recent subscriber to your substack. I’ll be driving down from Seattle. I can’t make the meetup on Saturday.

Saturday afternoon is my only chance to do Mt. St. Helens. You'd just meet us there?

Hi Bryan! I'm interested in the Mt St Helens hike on Sep 12 if the weather permits. I'm just a bit nervous about crossing the border as I would need to drive down from Vancouver. Do you think it's safe?

I won't be able to make it to the meetup because I'll need to quickly turn around to get back home the next morning.

Actually, I have an important work appointment on Sep 12, which means I can't make it to St. Helens.

My loss! But I wouldn't be afraid to drive if you're a Canadian citizen. The media is not reality.

Me and my wife are thinking of coming down from Seattle for one or both of the Mt. St. Helens hike and the Portland meetup. Just need to know how to find out the time and place for them.

We actually just hiked in the Mt. St. Helens area for the first time last weekend, so I know a tiny bit about the hiking in the area. Do you have a trail/route in mind?

Still learning. I couldn't arrive until around 2 PM Sept 13, so I'd just go for the highlights.

In that case you probably would like this trail [0] of a ridge on the north side. It's the one we were directed to by a guide at the visitor center as "the classic Mt. St. Helens experience". It takes you along a ridge line getting progressively better views of the crater off in the distance. Getting up close and personal with the mountain involves some strenuous work, and in the case of the direct ascent from the south a climbing permit obtained one month in advance. Also FYI, the top recommended trail from ChatGPT starts at the Johnston Ridge Observatory, but that is not possible right now because the road is out.

I also found the Interpretive Center's [1] little museum ($5 entry) to be time well spent.

Hi, Bryan! I met you when I was the president of the libertarian club at Harvard and we invited you to speak - I think back in 2005 or 2006 - and have been a huge fan of your clear, engaging, concise writing and straightforward thoughtful reasoning ever since. I'm in Portland now and would love to meet up!
