Very good post.

I have an admittedly picky point. You write, "But as voters, you have done everything you could to keep these poor people from competing in First World labor markets on equal terms."

My guess is that many of them don't vote. And I know that they don't get to vote on immigration laws. If we had a referendum on immigration, I would be fairly confident that you're right. But we don't.

My edit would be, "But as citizens you have advocated, or supported those who advocate, keeping these poor people from competing in First World labor markets on equal terms."

>> In a just world, your diligent assistant waiter from India might be your boss.

Usually you make the argument that open borders would be good for the people behind the wall, this last line doesn’t quite sound like that.

Excellent post. I was blown away by the value and quality of service on my one (short cruise).

Would recommend the following article on cruise ship economics: https://worksinprogress.co/issue/progress-unmoored/

I would go further. Not only is it fine for these Third World employees to stay below decks when off duty, but it would be fine if it were 1st World employees. Tourists don't want to see employees lounging around. They are willing to pay extra for that. A lot, I bet. And staying in a cabin isn't a hardship, especially in the videogame/Instagram Age.

I am convinced. Let’s allow unlimited numbers of immigrants into California. Plenty of sidewalks to sleep on. No shortage of bushes and beaches to use as toilets. Free MediCal insurance (or is it $30 month?) Free schools for the kids. Housing, energy and food subsidies. Complementary needles. Preferential DEI acceptance into colleges and jobs. We might even have a high speed rail system soon for them.

Let’s just do it!
