This is a big week for me.
Tomorrow, April 30
Tomorrow at 4 PM the Cato Institute is hosting a book party for my Build, Baby, Build: The Science and Ethics of Housing. Reasons to attend:
Never seen the gorgeous cathedral of liberty that is the Cato building? That alone is totally worth the trip.
I’ve prepared an almost totally new talk on the book, complete with almost totally new visuals.
Commentator Megan McArdle!
You can obtain the book a day early — and get it signed.
You’re more than welcome to arrange carpools in the comments!
Not convinced? You can still enjoy the livestream.
The Day After Tomorrow, May 1
This is the official release date for Build, Baby, Build. If you pre-ordered, thank you! The book should arrive right on the nose. If you haven’t ordered yet, I think you’ll be glad if you do.
I started writing BBB during the earliest days of Covid, and while it took longer than I expected, I’m thrilled by the lush final product. I encouraged artist Ady Branzei to go full classic Disney in the illustrations, but the colors are straight out of the great Hergé, creator of Tintin. The Cato production team did a top-notch job. I like touching the paper.
Long-time readers will be familiar with perhaps half of my arguments. Some of my favorite oldies I incorporate into the text include “NIMBY as Economic Illiteracy,” “Revive Construction, Not the Rust Belt,” and “Skip the Line: A Modest Proposal.” But even if you know all of these pieces by heart, the book is full of ideas that are definitely novel and hopefully true. And as in Open Borders, I include detailed Endnotes and References to enable curious laymen and active researchers to review the evidence on which my arguments rest.
The Rest of the Week
I’ve got piles of media scheduled, but I’m happy to do even more! Interviews, podcasts, public talks, op-eds, abridgments, excerpts: If you’ve got an audience that wants to hear about housing regulation, I’m all ears. Many thanks, dear readers, for your continuing support.
Oh yea,
I'll ask again: Please do an AMA, maybe around next week, after we've had a chance to read it!
I bought 5 copies, sir. Should be arriving today. Got a free trial of Prime so I could get them on launch day. Will be sharing with my friends and NIMBY parents! Got the Kindle edition too, cause I just couldn't wait. Although it looks terrible on an actual Kindle. Still readable tho. But better on a computer. I bought them in Canada and I noticed the Kindle version said "Printed in Canada" even though it's not actually printed. Curious: Are they all printed in Canada for some reason? Or only copies sold in Canada?
