Confused, at this and other points.
This is borrowing language from the biblical parable of "The Mote and the Beam" https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Mote_and_the_Beam
I think it means like a log. As a contrast to the splinter in the libertarian's eye, there is a much larger log/beam in the economist's eye, in Caplan's opinion.
