"Parents look at the world, form roughly accurate beliefs about the costs and benefits of kids, and make babies until they foresee that another would be more trouble than he’s worth." Not technically false, but it is less "the more trouble" he/she/whatever causes, as the most costly by far is the first kid (mostly by being a career-stopper for one parent) - just the marginal use of each child more (extra-joy of another outlet for your parental love) seems to go down fast. - For most users.

Almost everything is almost everywhere, lumpily. Sometimes economics is a basic cause and sometimes merely a non-basic cause or effect.
