People who play the academic publishing game simply must accept the rules of the game. In my opinion academic publishing is truly just a game. BC, you know this way better than most. Why bother publishing in an academic journal in the first place, especially you, of all people.

the variance around the mean, specifically the estimate of the population variance from a "micronumerous" sample.

Not sure I agree with this take. A regression coefficient is the *unique* relationship between the predictor and outcome, net of other variables. So if two predictors are highly correlated, I worry that the tiny leftover parts that make up the coefficient are weird, not central parts of the variables.
